Leeds City College

Rope Task were approached by Dortech – Architectural Glazing Specialist to provide rope access methods that would allow two glazing fixers to access elevations of Leeds City College to remove and replace broken double and single glazed units from a curtain wall system.

Our first site visit assessed the viability of rope access, was this the best method to use? Due to the location of the broken glass unit other means of access using a MEWP or scaffold was either too intrusive or it was not safe due to the ground conditions. After inspecting the roof area and establishing that suitable anchor points were available, we then decided that we would produce risk assessments, safe system of work and a suitable rescue plan that were presented to the client.

The client along with the construction company Kier agreed with our method of works and operatives and equipment were arranged to complete the task.

Working along with a mobile 35-ton crane, banksman and ground workers, we removed the existing broken single glazed unit. This was safely transported from its fixed location in the structure using the crane, lifting tackle and the vacuum lifter attached to the glass. The rope access team carefully removed the caps and pressure plates that hold the glass secure. This process was set out in our safe system of work that was followed by all of the separate teams on site.

The glass was then lowered to the floor. The ground team then placed the broken glass onto a stillage and prepared to lift the new replacement glass unit. Once this had been lifted into place the rope access team set about installing and securing the new unit. Once completed, with all pressure plates and caps installed the vacuum lifter was removed and the job was complete.
