Mullaghglass Quarry – Rope access solutions
Mullaghglass quarry in County Antrim Northern Ireland was the unlikely setting for a large rope access contract completed by Rope Task Limited. Initially the site was an old stone quarry that had been granted planning to turn into a large landfill site.
With its proximity to Northern Ireland International Airport part of the scheme was to engineer & build steel towers, some up to 80 meters in height that would then be linked together with 32mm steel rigging cables which would then hold netting that would prevent birds from congregating on the landfill and causing danger to aircraft.
Thousands of tonnes of steel towers, cables and nets were built, lifted and installed using heavy machinery and cranes. The final bolts and fixings were all installed by Rope Task, utilising rope access methods, these structures, cables and nets were all attached together safely, all at heights up to 80 meters.
The project ran over several years including the ongoing maintenance and repair of the completed netting system. The successful completion of this project resulted in Rope Task being awarded the delivery of the same package at the Aughrim landfill site.
